1 Josef Mengele Josef Mengele was born on March 16, 1911, in Günzburg. In 1937 Mengele  joined the Nazi Party. About three years later in 1940, Mengele was drafted into the army, and thereafter volunteered into the medical service of the Waffen-SS (Armed SS). In April of 1943, he received a promotion to the rank of SS captain; this advancement shortly preceded Mengele's transfer to Auschwitz, on May 30, 1943. Josef Mengele was an SS physician famous for his inhumane medical experimentation upon concentration camp prisoners at Auschwitz. He experimented with and researched eugenics. Eugenics is the science of improving a human population by controlled breeding and sterilization to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics. At this time Hitler had passed a law requiring all inferiors (mentally and physically disabled) to be sterilized. Sterilization was the removal of ones ’  ability to reproduce. Between 1933 and 1937, some 200,000 young Germans were sterilized after the Nazis found that they suffered from genetic diseases. Mengele had become interested in utilizing twins for medical research through Verschuer, famous for experimenting with identical and fraternal twins in order to trace the genetic srcins of various diseases. At Auschwitz, Josef Mengele did a number of medical experiments, using twins. These twins as young as five years of age were usually murdered after the experiment was over and their bodies dissected. He carried out twin-to-twin transfusions, stitched twins together, castrated, or sterilized twins. Many twins had limbs and organs removed in macabre surgical procedures, performed without using an anesthetic. Mengele also injected chemicals into the eyes of the children in an attempt to change their eye color.  2 This event ended in the early months of 1945, due to the liberation of the camp. Josef Mengele disguised himself as a normal solider and fled Germany in order to hide. Many tried to search for him, but he was never found. He ended up dying in Brazil in 1979 and was buried under a different name.
