Conversion Kit, Use The first step in programming a replacement ECUis to check the hardware number of the ECU beingreplaced and compare it to the hardware number of thereplacement ECU. It is possible these numbers do notmatch because newer replacements for the srcinal ECUmay have been made available since the vehicle was built. If the numbers do not match, a hardware numbermis-match error will occur during the programmingprocedure. This occurs because a check is madeduring the programming process to ensure the ECUbeing programmed is correct for the vehicle. To makethis check, the replacement ECU hardware number iscompared to the information in the database for thatvehicle. If these numbers do not match, a hardwarenumber mis-match error will occur. Use Conversion Kit tomake the necessary hardware number updates.  Volvo Trucks North America, Inc.  Date Group No. Page Service Bulletin  9.2004  000 004  3(16) Conversion Kit, Function ã  Connect to the vehicle’s communication connector andstart the VCADS Pro application. Select ConversionKit from the menu (located within function group 1). ã  Connect the PC to an appropriate communicationconnection (telephone or network). Start the operation.Communication with the vehicle will take place and aconnection to Volvo is initiated. ã  After the communication with Volvo has occurred, awindow appears to display the result. ã  In the conversion kit section of the window (the lowersection), some of the ECU’s installed on the vehiclemay be listed. The number to the right of the ECUname is the hardware number that is registered in VDAfor that vehicle. The number(s)listed below the ECUname are the ECUhardware numbers that are acceptable replacementsfor that ECU in this particular vehicle. If the ECU that is being installed appears in the listof ECU’s, select the hardware number that matchesthe replacement ECU. In most cases, the hardwarenumber of the replacement ECU can be found on alabel affixed to the ECU or its package. There are certain exceptions to this however. Theseexceptions are noted in the information on the followingpages when applicable. W0002096  Volvo Trucks North America, Inc.  Date Group No. Page Service Bulletin  9.2004  000 004  4(16) If the ECU being replaced does not appear in the list: ã  Refer to the appropriate chart on the following pages, corresponding to the ECU that is to be installed. ã  In the chart, find the hardware number of the srcinalECU in the Old Part Number column. Make surethe hardware part number of the replacement ECUmatches the number in the New PartNumber column.Note that there may be more than one new hardwarenumber that is acceptable to replace a single oldhardware part number. The corresponding conversionkit number will be found in the Conversion Kit columnof the chart. ã  Important:  Ensure the hardware part number ofthe ECU to be installed is listed as an acceptablereplacement for the one that is being replaced. ã  Click the   Accessory Kit  selection in the uppersection of the Conversion Kit window in VCADS Proand enter the conversion kit number into the accessorykit blank. ã  Click the OK button. Enter a generated password (fromyour digipass) or static password (if applicable) whenrequested, and a connection will be made to Volvo. After communication with Volvo has taken place, aprompt will appear stating that the conversion kit hasbeen ordered. At this point, the replacement ECU can be programmedusing the appropriate programming operation ( MID ???ECU Programming ,  where   ???  = the MID numberof the ECU).
