Published as part of a political commentary series in Isolabantu: The Peoples ’    Eye Newspaper  , Final Edition, 2018: https://issuu.com/d-towncommunitynews/docs/isolabantu_late_final_april_2019 The Outside View By Warren Jeremy Rourke Our president, Cyril Ramaphosa, is a business first man.  A business first man personally worth 6.4 billion rand, 31 properties, and significant shares in United States owned companies, in South Africa, like McDonalds and Coca-Cola  –  as well as  –  British owned mining companies, in South Africa, like Lonmin. There is the fact that he is chair of the board of the South African telecommunications company MTN, but, everyone reading this knows the cost of data, which Thabo “Tbo Touch” Molefe   once called “daylight robbery”. But, Ramaphosa is not the only business first president of his country: Donald Trump of the United States is a property developer and one of the 1000 th  richest people on the planet; Emmanuel Macron of France was an investment banker; Prime Minister of Britain, Theresa May, worked at the Bank of England, and so on and so on. Okay, it’s all about business first in the world today and so Ramaphosa is the man for the job. But, don’t be too surprised when his ‘economic turnaround plan’ which aims to bring more ‘foreign fixed investment’ (more McDonald’s and Coca - Cola’s and Lonmin’ s) into the country, leaves us with more minimum wages and more stories like a 185 families using 7 flush toilets. The problem is not business, or business people. We need more of them who genuinely care about South African communities. The problem, is that we need less business first businessmen who, as with the City’s draft budget, do not listen to, or take into account, the real needs of The People.
